The first settlement was founded in the second millennium of the old era. The river Fojnica is gold-bearing. “Golden River” brought here-in the ancient Romans, in masses. Fojnica is the first mint. Also, the first trade and handicraft centre. Kozograd, Zvonigrad and Kašteli are ancient Bosnian towns in this region.
The town of Fojnica exist from the year 1365. In the year 1469, Fojnica was inhabited by 329 families. Mostar had only 19 families, in the very same year.
The Franciscan monastery keeps 17.000 volumes and 13 incunabula printed up to the year 1500. The same monastery also holds the “Ahdnama”, the permit issued by the Sultan Mehmed Fatih The Second to Bosnian Franciscans.
There are famous and old mosques: Atik – Srednja (1551), Hadžimuharemova (1682), and Čaršijska placed on the place of Šaban-Ahmedova (1666). Dervish’s-houses (Tekkes): Vukeljići and Oglavak. The “Musafirhana”, family house of the Salihagić. “Gornja mahala” oldest part of Fojnica with old (traditional) Bosnian houses. At the end, famous healing of thermal water from centuries.
